The AzPTA Supervision Resource

This Supervision Resource is designed to be a comprehensive source about supervision issues in physical therapy practice in Arizona. It can serve as a guide for clinicians, administrators and managers faced with difficult and sometimes complex questions relating to supervision of the physical therapist assistant (PTA), rehab aides/technicians, and students.

Several practice scenarios are included along with the interpretations and commentary from the Arizona Physical Therapy Association (AzPTA) Practice Committee. In all cases, common concern about the wellbeing of the patient/client and the responsibility of a profession to police itself are foremost in our discussions. This resource does not supersede the authority of the Arizona Board of Physical Therapy in exercising their responsibility for interpreting and enforcing Arizona laws, nor the responsibility of the APTA Ethics and Judicial Committee and the AzPTA Chapter Ethics Committee in making determinations about ethical practice for members of the APTA.

This resource contains information that can be used to guide legal and ethical practice regarding professional accountability when physical therapists supervise assistive personnel. Many of the situations faced by practitioners involve complex judgments and consideration of conflicting value systems between the therapists, patients/clients, organizations, payers, and healthcare policy. The commentary provided is designed to guide practitioners when making decisions regarding supervision.

This resource includes links to the Physical Therapy Practice Act (Arizona Revised Statutes A.R.S. Title 32, Chapter 19) and the Administrative Rules (Arizona Administrative Code Title 4, Chapter 24) from the Arizona State Board of Physical Therapy, The American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA’s) Code of Ethics and accompanying Guide for Professional Conduct, the APTA Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant and accompanying Guide for Conduct, and relevant policies and guidelines of the APTA.
